Scheduling Articles and Managing Publishing Dates in Joomla 6

Joomla 6 makes it easy to control when your content appears and disappears on your website. With the built-in scheduling system, you can automate article publishing and unpublishing, keeping your site fresh without manual work.

1. Why Schedule Articles?

Scheduling is useful for:

  • Publishing blog posts at specific times.
  • Managing announcements or limited-time offers.
  • Ensuring seasonal content goes live and offline automatically.

Instead of logging in manually, you can let Joomla handle the timing for you.

2. Setting Up Publishing Dates

To schedule when an article should be published or unpublished:

  • Go to Content → Articles.
  • Click New or edit an existing article.
  • In the right sidebar (Article Details panel), find the Publishing section.
  • Set the following options:
  • Start Publishing: Choose the date and time the article should become visible.
  • Finish Publishing: Choose when the article should automatically unpublish.
  • Created Date: Shows when the article was first made.
  • Modified Date: Updates automatically when you edit the article.

Once saved, Joomla will automatically publish or hide the article based on these dates.

3. Example Use Case

Let’s say you want to post a “Black Friday Sale” article that goes live on November 25 at 8:00 AM and disappears on November 29 at midnight:

  • Set Start Publishing: 2025-11-25 08:00:00
  • Set Finish Publishing: 2025-11-29 00:00:00
  • Save your article — Joomla will handle the rest automatically.

4. Checking Scheduled Articles

To view which articles are scheduled for future publication:

  • Go to Content → Articles.
  • Use the Status Filter to select Scheduled articles.
  • Joomla will show a list of all content waiting to go live.

5. Manually Publishing or Unpublishing

You can always override the schedule manually:

  • In the Articles list, click the Status icon (checkmark or X) to publish/unpublish instantly.
  • Alternatively, open the article and toggle Published or Unpublished.

6. Time Zone Settings

Make sure your Joomla time zone matches your local time to avoid confusion.

  • Go to System → Global Configuration → Server.
  • Find Server Time Zone and select your region.
  • Click Save & Close.

7. Automating More with the Joomla Scheduler

Joomla 6 includes a new Scheduler feature for background tasks. You can use it to ensure publishing events run even when no one is logged in.

  • Go to System → Manage → Scheduled Tasks.
  • Look for the Content – Publish/Unpublish Articles task.
  • Make sure it’s Enabled.

8. Best Practices

  • Always check the time zone before scheduling.
  • Use clear, descriptive titles for scheduled articles.
  • Double-check your “Finish Publishing” date — expired articles won’t be visible until reactivated.
  • Enable the Scheduler so publishing tasks run even on low-traffic sites.

9. Summary

With Joomla 6’s built-in scheduling tools, you can plan and automate your content flow effortlessly. Set it once, and Joomla ensures your articles go live and offline exactly when you want.
