How to Use Template Styles and Assignments in Joomla 6

In Joomla 6, you can create multiple template styles from the same template and assign them to different pages. This gives you incredible flexibility to customize the appearance of specific sections of your website — without installing multiple templates.

1. What Is a Template Style?

A template style is a saved configuration of your template’s settings. You can think of it like a “theme variant.” Each style can have its own colors, layout, logo, or module positions, but still use the same base template.

For example:

  • Style 1: For your Homepage — bright layout with large banner.
  • Style 2: For Blog pages — clean layout with sidebar.
  • Style 3: For Contact page — minimal layout with map module.

2. Viewing Template Styles

  • Go to System → Site Template Styles.
  • You’ll see a list of templates and their available styles.
  • The template marked with a yellow star is the current default style used across the site.

3. Duplicating an Existing Style

To create a new style with different settings:

  • Click the checkbox next to your template style (e.g. “Cassiopeia – Default”).
  • Click the Duplicate button on the toolbar.
  • A new copy appears (e.g. “Cassiopeia – Default (2)”).

You can now modify this copy for specific pages.

4. Customizing Template Style Options

To edit a style:

  • Click the name of the duplicated style.
  • Adjust template parameters such as:
  • Logo and Favicon
  • Color scheme or layout width
  • Header or footer module positions

When done, click Save & Close.

5. Assigning a Style to Specific Pages

This is where template styles shine — you can make different pages use different designs:

  • Open the style you want to assign.
  • Go to the Menu Assignment tab.
  • Select one of the following:
  • All Pages – The style applies everywhere (default).
  • Only on Selected Pages – Tick which menu items should use this style.

Example: Assign “Cassiopeia – Blog” to your Blog menu item only.

6. Checking Your Assignments

Once saved, visit your site and navigate through pages. You’ll notice different layouts or colors on pages using different template styles.

7. Managing Multiple Styles

  • You can create as many template styles as needed from a single template.
  • Use clear names like “Cassiopeia – Home” or “Cassiopeia – Contact.”
  • To set a new global default, click the star icon next to that style.

8. Use Case Example

Here’s a simple setup for a small business site:

  • Style 1 (Home): Full-width layout with hero image.
  • Style 2 (Services): Two-column layout with sidebar.
  • Style 3 (Contact): Minimal layout with embedded map.

This creates a consistent yet dynamic user experience without installing extra templates.

9. Summary

Template styles and assignments in Joomla 6 give you powerful design control. You can use one template in many ways, applying different looks to various pages — all within a few clicks.
