Setting Up Your Joomla 6 Site Configuration
After installing Joomla 6, the first thing you should do is configure your site settings. The Global Configuration panel controls everything from site name and metadata to caching and debugging. This setup ensures your website runs smoothly and looks professional.
1. Accessing the Global Configuration
To open the configuration panel:
- Go to the Administrator Dashboard.
- Click System in the top menu.
- Under the Setup section, select Global Configuration.
You’ll now see multiple tabs where all global settings are grouped logically.
2. The Main Tabs in Global Configuration
🧭 Site Tab
- Site Name: The name displayed in the browser title bar and email notifications.
- Site Offline: Temporarily take your site offline for maintenance.
- Default Editor: Choose your preferred editor (TinyMCE or CodeMirror).
- Default Captcha: Set up CAPTCHA for forms (recommended for security).
- Metadata Settings: Define your site’s global description and keywords for SEO.

- Session Settings: Adjust the session lifetime (how long users stay logged in).
- Path to Log Folder: Where Joomla stores log files — useful for debugging.
- Cache Settings: Enable caching to improve performance and reduce load times.
- Debug System: Enable detailed logs for troubleshooting (turn off on live sites).
🖥️ Server Tab
- Host & Database: Check your connection settings (set automatically during installation).
- Mail Settings: Configure email sending via PHP Mail or SMTP.
- Force HTTPS: Enable HTTPS to secure your entire site.
- Gzip Page Compression: Turn this on for faster page loading.
🔤 Text Filters Tab
- Control which user groups can use specific HTML tags in the editor.
- Helps prevent unwanted scripts or unsafe code in articles.
📜 Logging Tab
- Define which system activities Joomla logs — useful for tracking changes and debugging.
3. Recommended Configuration for New Sites
- Set your site name and metadata under the Site tab.
- Enable SEF URLs and URL Rewriting under System → SEO Settings.
- Enable Cache and Gzip Compression under the Server tab.
- Switch Force HTTPS to “Entire Site.”
- Keep Debug System off for live sites.
4. Saving and Testing Your Configuration
Once you’ve made your adjustments, click Save or Save & Close. Refresh your website in a new tab and verify that all features (like caching and HTTPS) are working properly.
